INDO-PAK PARTITION A CINEMATIC ANALYSIS

MAYURI THAKAR

ABSTRACT

The role of cinema in depicting the Partition of India and Pakistan, as it is one of the most traumatic and chaotic event which changed the lives of millions of people. The impact of it is still felt in the lives of people. To study the impact of cinema on the issue of Partition is the goal of this paper. In specific terms, the paper depicts the change in situations of minorities during homogenous and heterogeneous times in the same locale as depicted in the Indian cinema. Partition plays an important role in determining the fate of the minority community in such differing times. For this purpose, I have selected few Partition Cinema movies like Gadaar, Pinjar and Earth. These movies are based in different locales spread on both sides of the border. This will give us a holistic view of the locales in such conflicting times. I’ll first introduce the overlapping of Partition and Indian Cinema. Later, I’ll take into account the different times in selected films i.e. before Partition and at the time of Partition and the impact it made, especially, on the minority of the locale. In the analysis of each selected movie, I’ll try to show the relationship between people of majority and minority and the sea-change after Partition.

MODELING MELODIC PHRASES FROM HINDUSTANI CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR STUDY OF INVOCATION OF EMOTIONS

MRUDULA KULKARNI, DR. SANDHYA DHABE, COL. ATUL DHABE & MANJUSHA PANDE

ABSTRACT

36 individuals from various strata of life and of varying knowledge of music were subjected to listen to short clips of instrumental music in Indian classical format for about 3 minutes. The clips were drawn from various ragas dealing with known types of emotions. The listeners were asked to select the segment of the clip that invokes the concerned emotion most intensely. After collecting data, the most accepted segments were expressed as melodic phrases in terms of musical notes. The phrases were quantified in terms of frequencies of the notes involved. A basic statistical model was formed that can reduce a phrase to a numeral that can be treated and the pattern thus arrived at can be statistically analyzed.  It was found that the numerals associated with the ragas with changing emotions gradually from pathos to frolic and back to pathos, coinciding with time zones of the day that the ragas are allotted actually went on increasing to reach the maxima and started back reducing in value. This gives an impetus to further carry out a detailed research to validate the hypothesis that it is the melodic phrases formed by permutations of musical notes with varying emphases on each, that are responsible for invocation of various emotions and not the isolated notes as generally believed and taught in music schools.

A DEFENCE OF HENRY MILLER’S CRAZY COCK AGAINST CHARGES OF MISOGYNY BY KATE MILLET IN SEXUAL POLITICS

DR. ASHISH PANDEY

ABSTRACT

Henry Miller, the author of Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn has been doomed to notoriety mainly because of charges of obscenity in his books; and due to allegations of being a male a chauvinist who treats women as ‘things’ by Kate Millett in her seminal work, Sexual Politics. While Judge Sam B Epstein absolved him of all charges of obscenity in Tropic of Cancer, the allegations of misogyny levelled by Kate Millet tend to linger on even today. This paper aims at defending Henry Miller against the charges of Kate Millett in Sexual Politics. At the same time, it also explores the love hate relationship between the two great literary stalwarts.

भारताच्या आर्थिक विकासात कृषीक्षेत्राची भूमिका

प्रा. लोडे परमेश्वर लिंबाजी
