THE REAL MOTTO OF DR. AMBEDKAR'S WRITING

DR. UMESH B. BANSOD

ABSTRACT

Authors ought not to be above being reminded that it is their first duty to write agreeably. Some very disagreeable men have succeeded in doing so, and there is, therefore, no need for anyone to despair. Every author, be he grave or gay, should try to make his book as ingratiating as possible. Reading is not a duty and has consequently no business to be made disagreeable. Nobody is under any obligation to read any other man's book." This quotation by Dr. Ambedkar focuses on the responsibility of the author as well as it explains the nature of the book.

‘SEPARATIST’ FEMINISM

DR. CHHAYA R. SUCHAK

ABSTRACT

Somewhere during the early years of the last century, the word ‘feminism’ came to  be seen as a battle cry of the women’s movement for a ‘separate’ identity – separate from men, that is – and, naturally, it raised the hackles of the rising fascist and communist nations of the period. Even today, especially in Europe, this ‘separatist’ label stuck on feminism still colours, although, obliquely, most of  the debates on human righst (which, by definition, includes women’s rights). Interestingly, a number of women activists in the last century themselves came to abhor the term ‘feminism’, among the Virginia Wooflf and Simone de Beauvoir.

THE THEME OF MARGINALITY AND APPROPRIATION IN THE NOVEL SECOND CLASS CITIZEN BY BUCHI EMECHETA

KRISHNAMURTI SANGITA K. & DR. ANNIE POTHEN

ABSTRACT

All the commonwealth countries have gone through experience of colonialism and post-colonialism, which resulted in common social, political and economic problems.  As a consequence, the literature that emerged from these countries has a unity of theme despite diverse sociological contexts.  It is well-known fact that the impact of colonialism was extremely severe in the African countries.  An effective presentation of the contemporary social and political problems is the primary task of the African writers.  Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, Laurens Vander Post, Nadine Gordimer, Camara Laye are committed writers and all of them have powerfully presented the impact of colonialism and post colonialism of their country in their writings.  The nineteen seventies have witnessed a significant development in the realm of African novels by women writers.  The romanticized and distorted pictures of African women as found in the writings by the West were being replaced by more authentic voices.

DEPICTION OF CHITRANGADA AS A MODERN WOMAN IN TAGORE’S “CHITRA”

VIJAY P. SHIRSATH

ABSTRACT

Tagore was a great advocate of women’s liberty. Therefore, his women characters are meted out a very liberal treatment. Chitrangada, the heroine in the one-act-play Chitra is a glaring example of such kind. She stands for a modern woman who defies all the rules of the society and leads a very free and bold life. She proves to be even greater than Arjuna, a hero of the story. She proposes to him for marriage. When he rejects her proposal, unlike a common woman, she does not confine herself shedding tears within four walls. Instead, she undertakes hard penance and thereby pleases the two Gods – Madana and Vasantha and borrows voluptuous beauty and ultimately wins Arjuna’s heart. She surpasses Arjuna, the great warrior proving herself quite modern in every aspect.

LITERARY AND PATRIARCHAL FLUX: A STUDY ON NYLA, SALMA AND DURRANI

MOHD MUZAMIL SOHIL

ABSTRACT

Literature is one of the means of communication which became the tool of expression in the society of today. The present social circumstance has turned the world of human being into one platform. Writers have chosen the literature as a source of expression to bring out the social, cultural and political traditional beliefs in front of the world. These social happenings have inspired them about the male structured and social nostalgia existed in the society. They have not only contributed to the English literature but also depicted their social and cultural problems through the presentation of literature. These writers have shared their experiences and frustrations through their works that women have always been made to suffer from disappointment, disillusionment and frustration which arise from social restrictions. In male dominance societies women generally have had less freedom of movement and decision making on the various social issues. The restrictions on women in Muslim societies have inspired these writers to write and express anguish experiences of women. The present scenario of Muslim women is strengthened and stable as compared to the nineteen and early twentieth century. In this research paper efforts have been made to examine the works of Nyla Ali Khan, Rajathi Salma and Tehmina Durrani and interpret their social world in the context of their writings.

TOLSTOY’S DOCTRINE OF NON-RESISTANCE TO EVIL AS SOCIAL ETHIC

MARY SAMUEL

ABSTRACT

Non-resistance to evil is indeed meant for the moral and spiritual idea of absolute good. Practising non-resistance to evil is not just the doctrine for personal behaviour but also a social practice unfolding an entirely new perspective in an individual life while leaving a great impact on social mannerism too. Tolstoy carries a central place in the moral ethical systematic teachings. Considering non-resistance to evil as a principle of life, it creates in an individual a philosophical and ethical perspective towards the society as whole. Tolstoy asserts on the inclination of a person towards the quest of understanding the finite life and its position and its manifestation of moral discipline, tolerance and meekness. This basic doctrine demands practice of it every single day which manifests not just the ideological lifestyle but also moral behaviour of an individual.

Keywords: Tolstoy, non-resistance, evil, morality, social ethics, responsibility, call of conscience.
