PREMARITAL SEX HAS TO BE OR NOT TO BE IN OUR SOCIETY, WITH INSTANCE OF CHETAN BHAGAT’S SELECTED NOVELS

D. RAMSINGH PRABHU

ABSTRACT

It is observed that, in present scenario, literature and movies show premarital sex is not considered as a sin and those, who involve, never have guilty feeling. Particularly novels of Chetan Bhagat portrays their protagonist having premarital sex causally like drinking and eating whenever they have thirsty and hungry. Even though it is be taken for consideration that they are in love and their love is intended to be got married, it cannot be ensured that their love will reach the target of marriage. So the premarital sex can be taken as a taboo in a society like Indian. There is a film in Tamil, ‘Ner Konda Parvai’, which discusses on the topic of sex. But this film never questions the premarital sex; just it argues that consent of a female is must for sex. This film seems to be supportive to the novels of Chetan Bhagat in the idea of sex. Such films and literary works may give the idea that it is ok having sex even before marriage. So the question rises automatically that premarital sex has to be in our society or has not to be in our society. Has our society ripen to such extend that people’s mind is elevated beyond bodily restriction? Or has our society degraded to the level of animal world? Because our society has a culture, structure and it is deemed that all citizen of our country has to abide to its culture.

Key Words: sex, moral, society, literature and film.

THE CONCEPT OF SOCIETAL AND SPATIAL MARGINALITY IN IBIS TRILOGY

VAISHALI BORKAR & R. G. MUNGHATE

ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to present the concept of marginality and represent it with the dealing of Amitav Ghosh’s ‘Ibis’ trilogy including Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke and Flood of Fire. The vulnerable condition is experienced by individuals or communal due to unequal or inequitable social, economic, political, cultural and geographical condition or proximity. Marginality is determined by these socio-spatial structures that explore in the trilogy. The characters from the novels are experienced ‘displaced persons’ both individual and communal level in dominant hegemonic society. The purpose of this study is to investigate the marginality, its disadvantage and effect on the development of human beings with the analysis of the novels from Ibis trilogy. Societal marginality originated from social construction markers as age, gender, class, caste, religion, ethnicity and culture which derived from fundamentalism obsession. That is already existed in Indian society. Spatial marginality comes with the colonial enlightenment in Eastern countries. This marginality is based upon geographical scale which makes Eastern countries especially I concern about India as marginal territory.

Key word:- Societal, spatial, vulnerable, marginality

CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN AMITAV GHOSH’S THE SHADOW LINES

MARUF QUADARI

ABSTRACT

Cultural diversity represents a society in which several cultures co-exist. It is the composition of different cultures, races, religions, etc. It influences all the cultures to adapt together irrespective of their cultural differences. The present paper depicts the combination of various ethnicities, cultures, and generations collaborating and creating a different culture of their own. The Shadow Lines creates a platform for the fusing of cultures and ethnicity across borders. Amitav Ghosh shows the possibility of a multiculture-oriented society where every individual has a recognized identity. The borders remain as a subsidiary concern of a specific person. Tridib, in the novel is represented as a philosophical person who is captivated by the love of a person across borders. Ila also characterizes a cross-cultural relationship with Nick Price irrespective of their culture which justifies the multiculturalism in the novel. This paper searches the different national cultures across borders in the postcolonial period. The existence of different cultural identities in the contemporary period produces a space of its own.

Keywords:  Tribal, Rituals, Customs, Multicultural, Identity, Culture, Ethnicity, Postcolonial.

IDEAS AND IMAGERY IN THE POETRY OF SYLVIA PLATH

DR. RICHA VERMA

ABSTRACT

The themes of Sylvia Plath’s confessional poetry are clearly based on her experiences as a female working in a male dominated creative field, where woman’s opus is considered non-seriously.  The lack of community among women writers in the 1950’s and early 1960’s resulted in isolation for Plath within her own psyche, leading to her angst and animism. This experience of isolation, connects her to an ambivalence about self-image, image of the world and relationship between self and the world.  In her own fury and depression, she pushes her poetry into the world of death, and the fear of death and destruction produces a shrillness in her life or a kind of self-negation.. a negation that spreads from her body to her entire cosmos.  In the end she mourns herself as dead, continuing to play the parts of both the mourner and the mourned and of the consumer and the consumed.  Her career as a poet can thus be described as of suffering and pain, accompanied by violent ecstasy and the inability to control traumatic war-like experiences.
