POSTCOLONIALISM AND POSTMODERNISM: DECONSTRUCTING THE EUROCENTRISM

DR. KAPTAN SINGH

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the researcher looks the possibilities of cross stream relations between postmodern philosophy and postcolonial theory. The critical attitude of postmodernism helps to ground the intellectual revolutions against the imperialistic vision of colonialism. It critiques the power of knowledge to deconstruct the European imperialism and Eurocentric epistemology. In the present paper, the researcher has applied the qualitative and interpretive methodology. Moreover, the text focused working method is used to interpret the works of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Francois Lyotard, the leading strategists of the postmodern age. It is found that they set the direction of the movement and enriched it against the reason, truth and knowledge oriented approaches of modernism. In cognizance of this, the texts of the intellectuals of third world countries; Edward Said, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Homi K. Bhabha, Chinua Achebe etc., are analysed here as corresponding to the voice of the post-modern vanguards. They, in line with postmodern thinkers, questioned the Eurocentric approaches of colonial empire. Postcolonialism, in response to the colonial version of reason and reality, claims that in the name of so-called ‘reason, truth and knowledge' western civilization has always wrought its superiority on Asian and African countries. A succinct study of postcolonial and postmodern thinkers reveals that the truth represented by the colonial body of text is one way of thinking. Therefore, metaphysically they challenged the power of knowledge and believe that it was a colonial strategy to propagate an imperialistic reality to impose the superiority of Caucasian culture over the Asiatic and Africans. While, concurrently, epistemologically they criticize reason and also emphasize on the subjective version of reality and repudiate the Eurocentric notion of objective reality. They disregard the objective reality which western authorities used to colonize the thoughts and the ideas of the native people.

ENDURANCE OF PAIN AND SUFFERINGS OF HOLOCAUST IN ELIE WIESEL’S NIGHT

R. V. SIVARAMAN & DR. J. UMA SAMUNDEESWARI

ABSTRACT

Beliefs and values of a person transforms when death waits at every waking moment. In Elie Wiesel's memoir, “Night”, Wiesel finds ways from his companions and morals to survive the Holocaust. It is expected that the Holocaust survivors would lose faith in God, their determination to go on living, and their reliance in others because of the horrific experiences that they faced day to day. But Elie Wiesel on the other hand, endured the sufferings in the concentration camp. It is explicable that men in concentration camp would question their faith in God while they were to face death either in the gas chamber or in a revolver head. A person would question living when he sees the demise of loved ones and fellow Jews right before his eyes. When starting to give up on all hope of life and God, it would be anticipated that one would no longer trust others, especially when they are fighting each other for their own survival. Contradictory to this, Elie Wiesel stood strong as much as he could. Night illustrates the values in human ties even during the anguish of the reprehensible treatment that the Jews received every day.

CONTEMPORARY CINEMA AND MEERABAI: A STUDY OF GULZAR’S MEERA (1979)

JIGYASA HASIJA

ABSTRACT

The article attempts to take a close look at the relationship between tradition and modernity in the present context of commercial transformation of Indian visual culture and media, more specifically, the genre of the movies. Tradition gives us a perceptiveness to observe the past that contributed to the present, and to examine how it affects future developments. At times, India has shown an edifying rift between those who saw tradition as a fortress of conflict, and those who saw it as an impediment to modernising Indian culture. Tradition has never existed on its own concurrence; it has always incorporated and nurtured. In this context, it thus becomes imperative to comprehend the social ground within which formatting breathes, to understand the role of formatting itself. This work will be an effort at examining the link between the devotional songs and gender of the famous woman-Saint, Meerabai of Rajasthan, as represented in the popular 1979 movie titled Meera directed by Gulzar. The analysis will focus on the songs excerpted from the film, as well as relate them to the popular bhajan tradition of the Saint Meerabai. By the contextual placement of the songs, the director invites the viewers to read in-meanings that may undermine those of other performance contexts, while at the same time profit from the songs’ popular enticement.

POSTMODERN DETERMINISM AND JERZY KOSINSKI’S NOVEL PINBALL

DR.S. KARTHIK KUMAR & MUZAFFAR MAQSOOD

ABSTRACT

Dissociative identity disorder or alter ego which means ‘the other’ explains exactly what modern man widely suffers. Modern man realizes that the floor on which he stands is about to collapse down and under which there is nothing but darkness and madness. Therefore he creates an apollonian world that veils Dionysian pit. He disguises himself in other identities, other characters, which he creates, not to cease to exist. When his apollonian world collapses, modern man is aware of what is broken is not the mirror but his fragmented ‘self’. This study aims to reveal the Dionysian madness of Domostroy behind the mirror analyzing the lives of the characters in  Jerzy Kosinski with the help of various terms. Moreover the title ‘Pinball’ is a nice metaphor for the events in the lives of the characters in the novel bouncing and reversing identities and partners like a ball in a machine. He doesn't hit it on the head too hard or lean on it more than it's able to support, and it works.
